Sack-Back Gown (robe à la française)

The robe à la française is characterized by broad, double pleated panels in the middle of the back, causing the skirt to billow out at the sides. This type of dress was dubbed ‘sak’ (sack-back) in the Netherlands. The silhouette was tight-fitting at the front, and the skirt was worn over wide hoops. The fabric of this dress, with woven stripes and little bouquets, was popular in the 1770s.
