Oude vrouw met gesloten ogen

Louis Joseph Masquelier (mentioned on object), c. 1790 - c. 1800

This monumental image of an old woman is impressive in its serene simplicity. Who was she? With the white highlights in her face she resembles a sculpted relief, a Roman portrait bust or a cameo. Around 1800 these kinds of models were popular and widely reproduced in print. Masquelier used a host of techniques. Examples of this print are rare, which suggests that it was more of an experiment for him.
