War in Russia

Dmitri Baltermants (mentioned on object), c. 1942

During the Second World War photographs of a country’s own dead soldiers and the destruction of war were largely censured. Many of Baltermants’ images of the fighting between Germany and the Red Army only came to light in Russia twenty years later. Without sparing the viewer, this photograph shows death blatantly and in all of its desolation.
