Firma Bennewitz en Bonebakker, 1816

William Prince of Orange (later William II) and the Russian grand duchess Anna Pavlovna were married in St Petersburg in 1816. Back in the Netherlands, they were showered with wedding gifts. The City of Amsterdam commissioned a 419-piece silver dinner service, a small part of which is on view here. The House of Orange family coat of arms features the Dutch lion. Most appropriately, the handles of the soup tureen are in the shape of lion heads.

    De twee rechthoekige komforen (C en E) met gebogen zijden en afgeronde hoeken rusten op vier gedrukte bolpootjes, waarvan de onderste helft is vervaardigd van ebbenhout. Aan de korte zijden van de onderrand verheffen zich de omkrullende steunen van de spoelvormige handgrepen. Langs de onder- en bovenrand van de rechte wand van het lichaam lopen filetranden. Op het komfoor ligt een losse plaat die een ovaal verdiept middenveld heeft. Hierin is een gaatjespatroon in de vorm van een bloem aangebracht. Aan de binnenzijde van het komfoor bevindt zich een uitneembare tinnen brander. De twee ovale schalen (B en D) hebben een rechthoekige, brede, vlakke rand met afgeronde hoeken, die is versierd met een filetrand. De deksels bestaan uit een convex onder- en een concaaf bovengedeelte, waartussen de scheiding door een filetrand gemarkeerd wordt. Het deksel is bekroond door een greep in de vorm van twee bladertakjes met eikels, die in het midden om elkaar heen gedraaid zijn.
