Joachim von Sandrart (I), 1640

Joachim von Sandrart (1606 - 1688). The company of Captain Cornelis Bicker, waiting to welcome Maria de' Medici, the dowager queen of France, 1638. The men of Cornelis Bicker served as a guard of honour when Maria de' Medici visited Amsterdam in 1638. They made this proud achievement the theme of their group portrait. The riflemen are grouped around a marble bust of Maria de' Medici. The sheet of paper beneath the bust contains a poem devoted to this painting by the famous 17th-century Dutch poet Vondel. Painted for the Great Hall of the Kloveniersdoelen, Amsterdam. On loan from the city of Amsterdam, 1885.
