The Narrative of a Five Years’ Expedition Against the Revolted Negroes of Surinam

John Gabriël Stedman, 1806

The Dutch-Scottish Stedman fought as a volunteer in an expedition army in Suriname against the Maroons (enslaved escapees and their descendants). He recorded his shocking experiences in a diary that was published in 1796. The engraved illustrations are after original drawings by Stedman. The book played an important role in the anti-slavery movement by drawing widespread attention to the inhumane treatment of people held in slavery.
