Narrative of a Five Years’ Expedition against the Revolted Negroes of Surinam

John Gabriël Stedman, 1806

In 1772 the Dutch-Scotsman Stedman was a volunteer soldier in an expedition army that had to suppress a slave uprising in Surinam. He recorded the shocking experiences in a diary, which was published in 1796. The engraved illustrations are after original drawings by Stedman. The book played an important role in the anti-slavery movement by bringing widespread attention to the inhumane treatment of slaves.
