Nocturnal Scene

Photographers could first begin taking photographs at night as technology made headway in the 20th century. They were facilitated by the emergence of lit shop windows, electric street lighting, and illuminated signs. As a result, big cities, such as Saint Petersburg, were no longer ever really pitch black. Photographers frequently depicted these sources of light – symbols of modern city life.
