Gunlock for a carronade with double, rotating cock

Rechts kanonslot (vuursteenslot) met messing huis en ijzeren slotmechaniek, haan en pandeksel. De haan heeft twee stel lippen, die kunnen draaien om een bout met een vleugelmoer: hij heeft twee vuurstenen, voor het geval er één onbruikbaar werd. Het slot wordt gemonteerd met een pin in de slotsteun en een bout er dwars doorheen. De pan heeft een gat waardoor de vonk naar het zundgat geleid wordt. Het aftrektouw loopt door een ring. De bevestigingspin is aangepast.

Explanatory note

  • Vuursteensloten met dubbele haan werden voor het eerst toegepast door Sir Howard Douglas in Engeland in 1817. Bij de Nederlandse Marine is dit slot vanaf 1821 tot 1825 uitgebreid beproefd, doch niet ingevoerd.

Entry

Right-handed gunlock (flintlock) with brass box and iron mechanism, cock and pan cover.

The cock has two sets of jaws, which rotate around a vertical axis with a wing nut: it is ‘double-flinted’ in case one of the flints were to become unserviceable. The lock is designed to be mounted with a pin in the base patch and a bolt right through it. The pan has a hole through which the spark is passed to the vent. The lanyard goes through a ring. The fastening pin for the base ring has been adapted.

Double-flinted locks were first used by Howard Douglas in the United Kingdom in 1817. This particular lock was tested by the Dutch Navy from 1821 to 1825, but was never adopted.
