Rijkswerf Vlissingen (possibly), c. 1829

Model van het bovenstuk van een roer met achtersteven en wulfconstructie, op een grondplank. De roerkop, die erg lang is en doorloopt tot het bovendek, waar het gat voor de roerpen zit, springt naar voren en is rond. De messing van het roer is afgerond, die van de achtersteven is scherp onderaan, maar wordt hol waar de roerkop begint. Het hennegat wordt afgesloten met een los deel in het wulf. Eén roerijzer en de zorgband zijn ingekrast.

Entry

Wooden demonstration model of the upper part of a rudder with sternpost and counter construction, mounted on a square base.

The head projects forward and is round; it is also very long and leads up to the upper deck level indicated on the model, where it has the tiller hole. The blade of the rudder is convex. The lower part of the sternpost is V-shaped in the usual way, but concave where the rudder head begins. The helm port is sealed off with a removable part in the counter. One rudder iron and the rudder pendant are indicated by scratches.

Cornelis Soetermeer (1782-1842) proposed this round-headed rudder to be used on sloops of war in 1829.1J.M. Obreen, Catalogus der verzameling modellen van het Departement van Marine, The Hague 1858, no. 220.
