Polarisatiefilter in houten doosje. Het filter bestaat uit twee delen: een is een messing buis met een ronde schijf aan ieder eind, waarvan een als oculair is ingericht. In de buis is een prisma in hout gevat aangebracht. Het andere deel is eveneens een messing buis, die in de eerste past, en heeft een grote ronde schijf aan een eind; in dit deel is ook een prisma aangebracht. In elkaar gezet geeft de wijzerstreep op de schijf van het eerste deel tegenover het oculair de hoek aan op de schaal die op de grote schijf van het tweede deel is aangebracht: deze schaal gaat van 350° tot 100°. Bij 360° ofwel 0° wordt maximum polarisatie van het licht verkregen.

Polarising filter in a wooden box.

The filter is composed of two parts: one is a tube with a disc at each end, one of which is the ocular. Inside the tube a prism is set in wood. The other part is also a brass tube, which fits into the first, and has a large disc at one end; this part also has a prism fitted inside. When assembled the disc of the first part opposite the ocular turns with a pointer along a scale on the disc of the second part; the scale is graduated from 350 to 100 degrees. At 0 or 360 degrees maximum polarisation of light is obtained.

The nature of this instrument was not known when it was added to the Navy Model Room: it was described as an optical instrument of unknown use. John Benjamin Dancer (1812-1887) was a famous manufacturer and inventor of philosophical, optical and nautical instruments in Manchester.
