Explanatory note

  • J.R. Baartmans was commandeur der kuipers op de Rijkswerf te Vlissingen. In 1844 verkreeg hij octrooi voor zijn uitvinding van houten waterkisten, waarvan hij twee types voorstelde: vierkante (kubusvormige) en driehoekige. De voornaamste voordelen waren de lage kosten en het geringe gewicht. Zij konden eenvoudig uit elkaar genomen worden en weer in elkaar gezet, en trokken spoedig na vulling dicht. De driehoekige echter waren minder waterdicht en namen te veel plaats in.

Entry

Model of a square wooden water tank.

It is made of tonged and grooved boards, held together with brass straps. In the top an oval manhole is indicated. The cover is missing.

J.R. Baartmans was Supervisor of the Coopers at the Navy dockyard in Flushing. In 1844 he obtained a patent for his invention of wooden water tanks, for which he proposed two types: square (cubic) and triangular. The main advantages were the reduced weight and lower cost. They could easily be taken apart and reassembled and soon after filling they would become watertight. The triangular ones were less watertight and more difficult to stow, however.1J.M.
