Model of a Ship's Galley

Model van een scheepskombuis voor het hoofddek, zwart geverfd. Het is een eenvoudige kubus met ijzeren wanden, staande op pootjes die een gat hebben om in het dek te worden vastgeschroefd. De kombuis heeft dubbele deuren met een schuif en slot. De vloer heeft twee niveau's, achter iets hooger dan voor; aan de voorzijde is een rooster met verplaatsbare ijzers. Het dak is schuin met een schoorsteen achter. Binnen zijn haken tegen de wanden bevestigd, waaraan kettingen gehangen kunnen worden.

Explanatory note

  • Volgens Obreen werd deze scheepskombuis in 1780 voorgesteld voor plaatsing op het bovendek. De kok kon zichzelf erin opsluiten om tegen regen en spatwater beschermd te zijn.

Model of a ship’s galley for the main deck, painted black.

The model is a simple cube with iron walls, standing on small feet with holes in them, that enable it to be bolted to the deck, and with double doors with a bolt and lock to the front. The floor has two levels, the back slightly higher than the front. At the front there is a grating with movable irons. The roof is slightly slanted and has a chimney. Inside, against the walls, hooks on which chains can be hung are indicated.

According to Obreen this galley design was proposed in 1780 and was to be placed on the main deck.1J.M. Obreen, Catalogus der verzameling modellen van het Departement van Marine, The Hague 1858, no. 571. The cook could lock himself inside the galley to protect himself from rain and spray.
