Model van het bovenstuk van een roer met ronde roerkoning en delen van een elliptisch hek, op grondplank. De roerkoning is gebogen en heeft een achtkantige top, zodat hij met een borgplaat geblokkeerd kan worden. Twee gaten bovenin de top voor de beugels van een extra roerpen (vgl. NG-MC-1355); de reserve roerpen is teruggevonden, de beugels ontbreken. De ijzeren roerpen, die onderdeks loopt, heeft aan het einde een verschuifbare ijzeren band met twee draaibare blokken: dit is de 'Rapson Slide'.

Explanatory note

  • De 'slide' was een uitvinding om de speling uit de stuurreep te halen en werd door John Rapson gepatenteerd in 1839. De Zeehond, lang 30.5 m, was het laatste schip dat op de Rijkswerf van Rotterdam werd gebouwd, door C.J. Glavimans in 1845-1850. Glavimans probeerde in 1845 dit roer voor alle brikken van 12 stukken in te voeren.

Wooden construction model of the upper part of a round-headed rudder, fitted in an elliptical stern, mounted on a rectangular base.

The head is made of a crooked timber and has an octagonal top, which can be locked by means of a plate with an octagonal hole. There are two holes in the top for fittings to hold a second tiller (compare model NG-MC-1355). The spare tiller has been recovered, but the fittings are missing. The iron tiller runs below deck. A cylinder that can move backwards and forwards and on which two blocks are fixed, is fitted to its end; this part is the Rapson Slide.

John Rapson invented and patented this slide in 1839, solving the problem of play in the tiller rope. This rudder, since 1819 in use on 18-gun brigs of the British Navy, was tested by the Dutch Navy on the brig Zeehond.1J.M. Obreen, Catalogus der verzameling modellen van het Departement van Marine, The Hague 1858, no. 222.

This model agrees in detail with the plans of the brig Zeehond in the collection of Het Scheepvaartmuseum.2NSM OA IIIAAA-79. Zeehond, 30.5 metres long, was the last vessel built at the Navy dockyard of Rotterdam, by Cornelis Jan Glavimans (1796-1857) from 1845 to 1850. In 1845, Glavimans tried to introduce this rudder to all 12-gun brigs.3HNA 2.12.01 Min. Marine, Exh. 8/6/1845 N70.
