Entry

Demonstration model of an elliptical mast for a yacht. In cross section it is drop-shaped, with its pointed end towards the rear. Above the hounds it is bent forward. The heel is rectangular.

Folkert Nicolaas van Loon’s (1775-1840) was the first to design an elliptical mast. He designed it for yachts and river craft.1J.M. Obreen, Catalogus der verzameling modellen van het Departement van Marine, The Hague 1858, no. 146.
