Model of a Ballista

Werkend model van een katapult. Het lichaam is een raamwerk met twee wangen, waarop een stootblok met stootkussen is aangebracht. De lepel hangt met zijn ondereind los tussen twee strengen touw. In neergelaten stand wordt de lepel geborgd met een pal, en het touw kan dan gespannen worden door het rond te draaien d.m.v. een handspaak met een raderwerk met pal tegen de wangen; als de lepel losgemaakt wordt, zwaait hij omhoog en wordt in verticale positie door het stootblok gestopt.

Entry

Working model of a ballista.

The body consists of a frame with two cheeks, on which a vertical buffer with a cushion is mounted. The arm is hung with its lower end between two strands of rope. When secured in its reclined position, the ropes are twisted around with a handspike and by a gear train with a ratchet in the side; the arm is released by a catch and stopped by the buffer.

The model is mentioned by Jochem Pietersz Asmus (1755-1837) in 1807 as belonging to his private collection.3HNA 2.01.29.02 Dept. Marine, Aanhangsel I, inv. no. 20, La. H no. 19. According to Obreen the model was made in 1798.4J.M. Obreen, Catalogus der verzameling modellen van het Departement van Marine, The Hague 1858, no. 759. A similar model of a ballista is in the collection of the Nationaal Militair Museum in Soesterberg.5Soesterberg, Nationaal Militair Museum, inv. no. NMM-NL 075800.
