Rijkswerf Vlissingen, 1862

The process of converting large sailing ships into floating artillery batteries led to a stream of innovations. One example is this armoured turret, from behind which riflemen could safely fire their weapons at the enemy.

    Halfmodel van een halfbolvormige geschutkoepel, blauw geverfd, op een grondplank. De buitenschil bestaat uit dertien van de in totaal zes en twintig segmenten, de binnenschil is opgebouwd uit horizontale platen. Op driekwart hoogte zijn zes schietgaten aangebracht en ter plaatse is de binnenschil verdikt. De buitensegmenten sluiten boven niet aan, maar laten een cirkelvormige opening vrij. Schaal 1:10 (afgeleid).

Explanatory note

  • Dit ontwerp voor een halfbolvormige koepel werd in 1862 door L.K. Turk ingediend voor de gepantserde stoombatterij De Ruijter. Op ware grootte zouden de wanden 114 mm dik zijn geweest. Turk's ontwerp werd aanvankelijk goedgekeurd, maar later afgewezen toen de moeilijkheden voor de productie van dergelijke gebogen pantserplaten duidelijk werden.

Wooden construction model of a hemispherical turret, painted blue, mounted on a rectangular base.

The wall has an outer layer of armour consisting of vertical segments (the model shows thirteen out of a total of twenty-six) and an inner layer of horizontal plates. There are six loopholes at three-quarter height, for which the inner plate has been thickened. The segments do not close at the top, but leave a circular opening.

This design for a hemispherical turret for riflemen was made by Lambertinus Katharinus Turk (1811-1873) for the ironclad steam battery De Ruyter in 1862. At full scale the walls would have been 114 mm thick. The design was accepted at first, but later rejected when the difficulties concerning the fabrication of the curved plates became evident.
