Michiel de Ruyter’s Goblet

Nicolaes Loockemans (?–1673), gold, enamel, 1667

The States of Holland rewarded Lieutenant-Admiral Michiel de Ruyter for his deeds with this precious cup. A continuous visual narrative showcases moments of the Dutch attack on the British war fleet on the Medway, largely destroying it. In the ensuing peace negotiations, it was eventually agreed that the British could keep New Netherland (the current state of New York). Among the territories the Netherlands retained were Suriname and the Moluccan island of Run with its many nutmeg plantations.
