Sailor Dress

anonymous, c. 1885

Sailor suits and dresses were widely worn from the mid-19th century. They were ideal children’s clothing: they provided freedom of movement, while still looking neat and tidy. Moreover, they were easy to produce on a large scale. This sailor dress has a belt at the hips. From the late 1870s girls wore this style with a dropped waistline, a typical children’s fashion.
