Male Nude

anonymous, c. 1880

Pornographic photography was strictly prosecuted in the 19th century. One way of lending a photograph of a nude some standing, and thus make it acceptable, was to have the model assume a pose derived from classical sculpture. The pose in this photograph seems loosely based on the famous Dying Gaul.
