Maharao Umed Singh of Bundi

anonymous, c. 1785 - c. 1795

The ruler Umed Singh’s (1743-1804) passion for horsemanship was well known. The maharao (a Hindu ruler in India) is here portrayed from a high vantage point, lending the image a certain dynamism. This equestrian portrait differs greatly from the prevailing popular standard type, in which the rider and horse are depicted parallel to the ground.
