Ragamala painting

anonymous, c. 1750

A leaf from a Ragamala series depicting a lady with a nobleman bowing over her feet. The lady is seated on a coach. She holds a bowl in one hand; in the other she has a bundle of grass that she feeds to a blackbuck. The scene is outdoors, in a landscape dotted with grass, shrubs and trees. Two monuments and a seated figure are visible at a distance. Above the painting there is a fragment from the Sanskrit poem Ragasagara (Sea of Melodic Modes; c. 17th century with later additions) written here in Telugu script.
