Boy Reading (Eddy)

Charley Toorop painted this portrait of her first child the same year she divorced her husband Henk Fernhout. The light by which young Eddy is reading his book is reflected in his face. Yet his mother also seems to have depicted him as if he himself is glowing and generating light in the darkness.
