Landscape in China
Hashimoto Kansetsu (signed by artist), c. 1930
Kansetsu had a deep and abiding interest in China and visited the country numerous times. This landscape was inspired by works from the 11th century. The tiny horsemen give a sense of man’s insignificance in the face of overwhelming nature. Kansetsu paid great attention to the texture of the rocks and trees, rendering them with lively brushstrokes.
