Jug

attributed to workshop of Anno Knütgen, 1576

The neck of the jug is embellished with an angel bearing the arms of England. The body is decorated twice with the arms of Salentin von Isenburg-Grenzau (Archbishop of Cologne) between two rampant lions. There does not seem to be any connection between the English and the Cologne coats of arms; the potter simply used the templates available to him in the workshop.

Description
Kruik van steengoed op standring met een bolvormig lichaam en smalle nek. Het C-vormige oor is bevestigd aan de nek en de schouder. Profielen op de nek en voet. De kruik is versierd met draairingen. Op de nek en schouder in reliëf het wapen van Engeland, gedragen door een engel en met de daum '1574'. Hieronder een leeuwenkop. Op de buik tweemaal een gedrukt en opgelegd medaillon in reliëf met het wapen van de Keulse aartsbisschop Salentin vin Isenburg, geflankeerd door leeuwen. Bevestigd aan het oor een tinnen montuur met deksel. Siegburg.
