Kris of Governor-General Baud

anonymous, 1834

J.C. Baud, Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies, was presented with this kris by Mangkoe Adie Ningrat, ruler of Pamekasan, during his inspection tour on Java and Madura in 1834. The exchange of gifts between native rulers and Dutch officials was important in maintaining good diplomatic relations. A kris, as a symbol of power that protected its wearer against evil, was a highly appropriate gift.

  • Description

    Madurese kris met een houten greep en ingelegde gouden inscriptie op de kling die versierd is met pamor-patronen. Het vergulden beslag van de houten schede is bewerkt met blad- en bloemmotieven en een monsterkop. Waarschijnlijk stelt dit Bonaspati, de angstaanjagende god van het bos, voor. De kris werd in 1834 door de panembahan (vorst) van Pamekasan, Mangkoc Adie Ningrat, geschonken aan de toenmalige gouverneur-generaal van Nederlands-Indië J.C. Baud (1789-1859). De tekst op de kling luidt: Aan Z:E den Gouv=er Gen=ad=int over. Ned=r Indie J:C:Baud.Keerzijde: Den Pan=m Van Panakassan Mangkoc Adie Ningrat/7e Junuarij+1834.

Explanatory note

  • Van mei tot augustus 1834 ondernam Baud een inspectiereis over Java en Madura. Tijdens de reis ontving Baud van verschillende vorsten lansen, krissen en een wandelstok.
