Pair of flintlock pistols

Jacob Kosters, c. 1670

Jacob Kosters, originally from Germany, moved to Maastricht in 1651. He lived in the house known as Het Hangende Zwaard (The Hanging Sword) and was a member of the guild of merchants. Various craftsmen – barrel makers, stock makers and lock makers – supplied Kosters with parts that he assembled into complete weapons, which he then signed on the lockplate.

  • Description

    Deel van een koppel. Het slot is gegraveerd met bladerranken, een gevleugelde figuur en een signatuur. De loop is gegraveerd met bladerranken en het cijfer 6; de tromprand is gemerkt met de letters S[..]MON. De massief ivoren kolf is gesneden met randen en acanthusbladeren en eindigt na een afscheiding van ebbenhout en ivoor in een kolfknop in de vorm van een mannenhoofd met een snor en een lauwerkrans. Het ijzeren beslag bestaat onder meer uit een schroefplaat met een ajour bewerkte verlenging in de vorm van verstrengelde slangen.
