Pair of flintlock pistols

These two flintlock pistols have exceptionally long barrels. Their fine decoration is characteristic of a group of arms produced around 1650 in the region between Maastricht, Liège and Sedan. The lockplates (on the side of the pistols) are decorated with a Classical scene featuring the wine god Bacchus. The cock is in the form of a snake with a coiled tail.

  • Description

    Deel van een koppel. De haan van het slot is in reliëf gebeiteld in de vorm van een gekronkelde draak; de slotplaat is versierd met bacchische scènes in hoog reliëf, op 106-A net iets anders dan op 106-B. De loop is achterop gebeiteld met twee panelen met mythologische scènes en daarvoor een vlak met diamantgeslepen patroon. De kolf is van gezwart walnotenhout. Het ijzeren beslag bestaat onder meer uit een ladekap, een trekkerbeugel met eveneens diamantgeslepen patroon, en een kolfkap in reliëf gebeiteld met vier Klassieke, gelauwerde hoofden in ovale medaljons rondom de roos onderop; de ebbenhouten laadstok is voorzien van een ijzeren kap.
