Spouted cup and cooling saucer

Meissener Porzellan Manufaktur, c. 1730

Hot beverages, such as coffee, were sometimes drunk in a curious fashion during the 18th century, namely from a saucer! The coffee was poured from the spouted cup into the saucer to cool more quickly. The chinoiserie decorations and the yellow background are typical of Johann Gregorius Höroldt’s designs.

Kop met tuit van beschilderd porselein. De kop is bedekt met een gele fond waarin uitgespaard twee vierpassen met gouden randen, waarin een Höroldt-chinoiserie bestaande uit twee figuren in een tuin. De kop heeft een oor, beschilderd met bloemen in rood en een spitse tuit die versierd met een symmetrisch bloem- en bladornament in parelmoerluster en goud. De kop is gemerkt.
