Great Tit Eating out of the Hand of a Horticulture Student

Richard Tepe (mentioned on object), c. 1915

People first began to realize around 1900 that nature had to be protected. Amateur photographer Tepe used photography to this end and was one of the champions of the nature conservation movement. Tepe specialized in bird photography and was the founder of this genre in the Netherlands. Sometimes a basket was used to lure the birds, and at other times they ate from someone’s hand.
