Coconut cup

anonymous, c. 1550 - c. 1600

Coconuts were rare in Europe in the 16th century and therefore costly. Three scenes from the Old Testament story of Samson decorate this cup.

    Kokosnootbeker met verguld zilveren montuur met deksel. Over het montuur verspreid bevinden zich opgesoldeerde blank zilveren amoretten. De voet wordt gedragen door drie hagedissen. De vaasvormige nodus is gedecoreerd met voluten. Het deksel wordt bekroond door een bisschopsfiguur. Op de kokosnoot zijn drie scènes weergegeven uit het leven van Simson: Simson wurgt de leeuw; Simson voor de poort van Gaza en Simson en Delila.
