Trunk

This trunk is decorated with gold lacquer and inlaid mother-of-pearl. This type of lacquerware is called Nanban. The Japanese used this word to refer to foreign traders in Japan – first the Portuguese and, from 1609, also the Dutch. The shape of the trunk and its scenes follow European models. The mother-of-pearl bands imitate the metal mounts on a Western-style European chest.

Description
Koffer met een cilindrisch deksel. Op de lange zijden en de deksel zijn drie velden aangebracht, omgeven door banden met geometrische patronen met inlegwerk van parelmoer. In de velden zijn dieren geschilderd tegen een achtergrond van bloeiende planten; het betreft herten, vogels, tijgers en runderen. Op de korte zijden bevinden zich steeds twee velden met bloeiende planten. De voorstellingen zijn aangebracht in goudlak tegen een zwarte achtergrond; hieraan is enig inlegwerk van parelmoer toegevoegd. De hoeken van kist en deksel zijn voorzien van beslag in koper. Ook de scharnieren, het slot en de slotplaat zijn van koper.
