Bell-shaped cup with Europeans in a Chinese shop

anoniem, c. 1740

Cantonese art for export. It was mainly for tea that the VOC - like other European trading companies - needed a base in Canton. But this South China harbour was also a centre for craft industries where Europeans were able to purchase all kinds of luxury articles. Often these were made by Chinese craftsmen and artists to specific orders from a European client or in imitation of a European example.
