Chest ornamented with scenes from the story of Susanna

This storage chest is richly ornamented: the three carved statues on the front represent the Dutch commanders William of Orange and his sons, Maurice and Frederick Henry. All three fought for the liberation of the north Netherlandish provinces. The panels between them present scenes from the Old Testament story of Susanna, who is threatened by two elderly men.

  • Description

    Kist van eikenhout met vlak deksel. De hoekstijlen en de middenstijl dragen atlanten in de gestalte van veldheren. Het front is verdeeld in vier vakken met taferelen uit de geschiedenis van Suzanna. In het fries links een wildezwijnenjacht en rechts een hazenjacht, waartussen een sleutelgat. De zijkanten zijn versierd met links een hertenjacht, rechts een konijnenjacht. Reliëfs naar Maarten van Heemskerck (?). De figuren stellen wellicht prins Willem I, Maurits en Frederik Hendrik voor.
