Child’s Chair for the Van Boven Family
Gerrit Thomas Rietveld, 1919 - 1923
Like Rietveld’s famous armchair (adjacent), this child’s chair is an example of his so-called slatted furniture. It was ordered by the architectural draughtsman Willem van Boven for his daughter. Rietveld designed furniture in his workshop rather than on the drawing board. This allowed him to improve experimental designs as he constructed them. Thus in later versions of this chair he moved the rather impractical foot-rest forward.
