Boy’s Coat with Matching Waistcoat

anonymous, 1790 - 1800

Clothes designed especially for children originated at the end of the 18th century. This development was stimulated by the Swiss-French philosopher Jean Jacques Rousseau in 1762. He wrote that children’s clothing should be cut generously to accommodate their growing bodies. This coat and matching waistcoat are an example of the new models adapted for children.
