Chain of the Amsterdam Company of Arquebusiers

anonymous, c. 1500 - c. 1524

Some of the links in this chain are decorated with claws, a symbol of the Amsterdam Company of Arquebusiers. The winner of their shooting contest – the ‘king’ of the guild – was allowed to wear the chain for a year. The names of two winners were attached to the chain in the 17th century.

Description
Schuttersketen van de koning van het Kloveniersgilde te Amsterdam; bestaande uit vijftien grote en kleine, vergulde schakels. Enige zijn samengesteld uit gekrulde bladeren met een vogelklauw, andere uitsluitend uit bloem- en bladornament. In graveerwerk op twee aan de keten toegevoegde schildjes: "Jacob Dirckz Sprongh Anno 1638 den 27 Mey" met een huismerk en de letters J D S en "Pieter Reyersen van Dyck Anno 1663" met een huismerk en de letters P R V D.
