Chain of the Veere Chamber of Rhetoric

In the late Middle Ages, many Dutch towns witnessed the emergence of societies of amateur orators and poets, the so-called rederijkers (derived from the French word rhétoriqueur, or ‘rhetorician’). This ceremonial chain was worn by the dean of Missus Scholieren, the chamber of rhetoric in Veere. It is one of the oldest rhetorician chains to have survived.

  • Description

    Keten van verguld zilver. Aan de uit dubbele, gedraaide schakels bestaande ketting, hangt het ruitvormig draagteken met een gegraveerde voorstelling van de Aankondiging. Tussen Maria en de engel een vaas met leliën, waaromheen een banderolle met het opschrift: 'In reinder jonste groeiende'. Onder de vaas op een voetstuk de letters: A.B.C.D. Aan drie punten van het draagteken een peervormig aanhangsel; aan de top een oog met ring, waardoor de ketting is gehaald.
