Double gourd vase with bats, gourds, leaves and tendrils

This vase in the shape of a double gourd has an underglaze copper-red decoration. The pattern includes bats and small gourds, leaves, and vines. The bat stands for good fortune. The gourd is a Daoist symbol of magical powers and refers to heaven and earth, which are united with each other in the form of the gourd.

    Kalebasvormige fles van porselein met een iets spreidende rand, beschilderd in onderglazuur rood met een doorlopende decoratie van kleine kalebassen, bladeren en ranken met hiertussen vleermuizen. Op de onderzijde een oud label met: Royal Academy of Arts, London/ International Exhibition of Chinese Art, 1935-6/ Ser. Nos. 1054/ Owner R. May, Zeist, Holland en een gescheurd oud label met: Vrienden der Aziatische Kunst. Onderglazuur koperrood.
