Cabinet
Northern Netherlands, 1700-1705, oak, veneer of various kinds of wood, lacquer, shagreen
A Dutch cabinetmaker made this fashionable piece of furniture by reusing lacquer from a Japanese chest that had fallen out of fashion. The incorporation of Japanese lacquerwork into Dutch pieces of furniture was a new phenomenon c. 1700, a practice that was subsequently adopted elsewhere in Europe.
