Young Man Reading over a Young Woman’s Shoulder

Suzuki Harunobu (mentioned on object), 1765 - 1770

A courtesan sits on the steps of a teahouse, reading a letter, while standing behind her is a young man, who is obviously curious to know its contents. Inscribed within a cloud-shaped cartouche along the upper edge of the print is a poem reading: ‘Our meeting at night at Iwabashi ends sadly at dawn, oh God of Katsuragi’.
