Ribbed housecoat

anonymous, c. 1930 - c. 1939

This heavy ribbed silk robe would have been worn at home as a dressing gown or for receiving guests. This was not unusual in the 1930s, when the distinction between garments for private and public eroded. To some extent this trend can be compared to the fashion for banyans in the 17th and 18th century.
