Dutch steamers on the frozen Zuyder Zee

William Heath, 1829

This artist of this print enlivened his impressions of a journey through the Netherlands with some old stereotypes. Such as the classic big bottoms covered by puffy breeches and skirts. And the penchant for smoking, carried to extremes. Also prominent is the independent Dutch woman. But perhaps there is also some awe at how effortlessly the Dutch glide across the ice?
