The Judgement of Paris
anonymous, 1550 - 1575
In Classical mythology, the young shepherd Paris was tasked with awarding a golden apple to the most beautiful goddess. He chose Venus, the goddess of love. Minerva, the goddess of the arts and sciences, and Juno, the goddess of marriage and fidelity, came off second best. The unknown artist worked from a print made in 1517 after a drawing by Raphael.
