Halberd

anonymous, c. 1600 - c. 1699

Halberds acquired a more ceremonial function by the late 16th century. The spike changed from a solid, four-sided point, ideal for stabbing, into a flat blade, while the axe head became fuller in outline. These larger areas were well suited to openwork decoration. The crossed anchors and the letters A on this halberd refer to the Admiralty of Amsterdam.

    Hellebaard met lange punt en gladde vleugels. Daaronder een bolvormig, gedraaid ornament. Bijl met twee vierkante uitsparingen waarin diagonaal scheepsankers zijn verwerkt. In de hoeken driehoekige uitsparingen. Gekartelde randen. Conisch gevormde, gedraaide schacht. Ver doorlopende lippen. Aan het uiteinde van de stok een spits toelopende, gedraaide punt (13.5 cm).
