Half Model of a Screw Steamer

Rijkswerf Amsterdam, c. 1859 - c. 1861

Gepolychromeerd en geheel beplankt mallenmodel (stuurboord) van een driemast schroefstoomschip met elf geschutpoorten. Het schegbeeld is een vergulde krul. Elliptisch hek met Rijkswapen; zijgalerij; roer met ronde roerkoning en afgerond roerblad; het model heeft een schroefkoker de Mangin-schroef met schroeflichttoestel, uitkomend onder een klein campagnedek. Zeeg naar voren meer opkomend dan naar achter. Rondspant. Het model is uitgerust met alle rusten en puttings. Schaal 1:50 (schaal op model).

Entry

Polychromed and fully planked wooden half bracket model of the starboard side of a three-masted screw steamer, mounted on a rectangular white wooden backboard.

The side of the ship is planked on top of frame moulds. Eleven gun ports are indicated on the bulwark. The bow features a detailed beakhead with a decorative, gold-painted scroll as a billethead. The stern is elliptical and bears the coat of arms of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Below the stern an aperture with a four-blade, Mangin-type screw propeller and a round-headed rudder with a rounded blade are depicted. The model has a well for lifting the screw propeller, which comes out beneath a small poop. The sheer is virtually flat. One sheer rail is indicated. The hull is round and painted a metallic copper below the waterline. The model has three sets of channels rigged with chainplates. The position of three masts and the bowsprit is shown in a truncated form.

The 16-gun wooden First Rate screw steamer Djambi, 58 metres long, was built by H.G. Jansen in Amsterdam from 1858 to 1860. In 1864 Djambi took part in the clearing of the passage of the Strait of Shimonoseki in Japan. It was sold out of the service in Simon’s Town (South Africa) in 1874. The sister ship Zoutman was built in Amsterdam from 1859 to 1861 and decommissioned in 1871.1A.J.
