Explanatory note

  • Obreen beschreef dit model als een kanonneerboot, maar het stelt zonder twijfel de loodsboot Assistentie voor die in 1796-1797 door P. Glavimans Jz. op ’s Landswerf te Rotterdam is gebouwd.

Entry

Polychromed wooden half bracket model of the starboard side of a single-masted flat-bottomed vessel, mounted on a rectangular wooden backboard.

The side of the ship is depicted by ribbands attached to frame moulds. The sheer rises towards both ends. One wale is indicated. The stern is round and fitted with a broad rudder with a hand tiller. The hull is flat-bottomed and painted white below the waterline. The position of one mast and the bowsprit are shown in a truncated form. Most of the bowsprit is now missing.

Obreen described this model as a gunboat in his catalogue,1J.M. Obreen, Catalogus der verzameling modellen van het Departement van Marine, The Hague 1858, no. 419. but it most probably represents the pilot vessel Assistentie built by Pieter Glavimans Jansz (1768-1850) at the Rotterdam dockyard from 1796 to 1797.2NIMH SDOC Assistentie.

Scale unknown.
