Half Model of a 36-Gun Frigate

Halfmodel van een fregat van 36 stukken door P. Glavimans, ca. 1789. Halfmodellen kunnen dienen als hulpmiddel bij de bouw van schepen, als een soort driedimensionale ontwerptekening. Pieter Glavimans (1755-1820) was scheepsbouwer op de Rotterdamse marine-werf. Toen in 1795 de regionale Admiraliteiten werden vervangen door een gecentraliseerde marine, werd Glavimans aangesteld als constructeur-generaal. Het gebruik van halfmodellen werd door hem op landelijke schaal geïntroduceerd.

    Gepolychromeerd mallenmodel (stuurboord) van een driemaster. Opvallend is het grote aantal spantmallen. Geen geschutpoorten; bakdek en halfdek zijn te onderscheiden door gillingen. Gewrongen spiegel, hol wulf, geen hek of zijgalerij; recht roer met vierkante roerkoning. De zeeg loopt iets op aan beide uiteinden, twee barkhouten en één reehout. Gepiekt rondspant. Schaal ca. 1:40 (schaal op model).

Entry

Polychromed half bracket model of the starboard side of a three-masted ship, mounted on a rectangular wooden backboard painted brown.

The side of the ship is depicted by ribbands attached to frame moulds. The forecastle and quarterdeck are outlined by ribbands and have square hances. The sheer rises slightly towards both ends. Two wales and a sheer rail are indicated, all are painted black. The bow features an empty beakhead and two cheeks, which are indicated directly on the beakhead. The stern has a round tuck and a hollow counter. The model does not have a taffrail or galleries. Below the stern, a straight square-headed rudder is indicated. The hull is slightly S-bottomed and painted white below the waterline. The position of three masts and the bowsprit is shown in a truncated form.

A remarkable feature is the large number of frame moulds used: twenty-five in total.

The 36-gun frigate Prinses Frederica Louisa Wilhelmina, 147 feet long, was built by Pieter Glavimans (1755-1820) in Rotterdam in 1789.1HNA 1.01.47.36 Admiraliteitscolleges, Losse Aanwinsten, inv. no. 17, Genealogie Asmus; J.M. Obreen, Catalogus der verzameling modellen van het Departement van Marine, The Hague 1858, no. 308. The frigate was renamed Brave in 1795. Brave was one of the ships captured by the British in Saldanha Bay in 1796.2J.C.J. de Jonge, Geschiedenis van het Nederlandsche zeewezen, 5 vols. and index, Haarlem 1858-62, vol. 5, pp. 236-75 The label appears to be from a later date, as it mentions the renaming of the ship, as well as an erroneous date.3Both Obreen, Asmus and an inscription on the model of the Brave (NG-MC-1889-10) mention 1789 as the year of construction instead of 1787, as inscribed on this model.
