Explanatory note

  • De brik van 18 stukken Gier, lang 100 voet, werd door P. Schuijt in 1795-1797 in Harlingen gebouwd; na uiterst zwak verweer door de Engelsen in 1799 genomen, waarvoor kapt.luit. Connio ter dood veroordeeld en gebracht werd.

Entry

Polychromed wooden half bracket model of the starboard side of a two-masted ship, mounted on a rectangular wooden backboard.

The side of the ship is depicted by ribbands attached to frame moulds. The sheer is almost flat. One wale and a sheer rail are indicated, both are painted black. The bow features an empty beakhead and a bollard timber. The stern has a round tuck and a hollow counter. Below the stern a straight, square-headed rudder is indicated. The hull is S-bottomed, very sharp towards the stern, and painted white below the waterline. The position of two masts and the bowsprit is shown in a truncated form.

The 18-gun brig Gier, 100 feet long, was built by Pieter Schuijt in Harlingen from 1795 to 1797.1J.M. After having shown mere token resistance, Gier was captured by the British in 1799 – for which the commanding officer Captain Nicolaas Connio was court-martialled and condemned to death.2HNA 1.01.47.36 Admiraliteitscolleges, Losse Aanwinsten, inv. no. 17, Genealogie Asmus.
