Group Portrait of Women in Military Uniforms

Willem Hendrik Dikkenberg (mentioned on object), c. 1897 - c. 1940

A group of young women are dressed up as soldiers, including stuck-on moustaches and cigarettes. They had this picture taken in a Haarlem studio. Apart from their names and places of residence noted on the back, we know nothing about them. Although women in this period more often put on ‘men’s clothes’ (temporarily) both on stage and in real life, the reason for this dressing up is unknown.
